The Resin-Bonded Sand series (RBS) was conceived through working with cast bronze. Bonded sand, an important component in the casting process, is ordinarily a disposable material, compacted into large blocks to create single-use molds. Adapting the material to a new process has generated an ongoing series of shelving, tables, lamps and vessels. Each object is entirely unique, created using a subtractive process akin to marble sculpting.
After a block has been carved, shaped and textured, a resin is applied to the form, seeping into its outer layers. Once cured, a process of excavation separates the uncured sand from the sculpted form, to reveal the hard-shelled object.
