'Ice Casting' is an experimental processed developed by Steven Haulenbeek that utilizes hand carved ice molds to create unique objects in Cast Bronze. These objects are created within, and as a result of the naturally frigid winter environment where they are created.
Ice-Cast Bronze is a collection of unique pieces that were created using the unconventional process. Each piece begins with a block of solid ice or sometimes a just a frigid Chicago winter day. A recess is meticulously carved into the ice and then filled with hot casting wax. The rapid cooling of the wax against the ice creates an other worldly texture and each piece is transformed into solid bronze via the lost wax process. Each piece is one-of-a-kind as the wax is destroyed within the process of making the objects in bronze. Each object is painstakingly patinated, finished, stamped and numbered.
